Heh.. No wonder even in pulsed mode my 5642s were expiring.
I did read with interest that magnesium (Mg) being a light metal can be used as a getter if sensible precautions are taken such as a glass shield around the getter with a small gap to let stray gases in. This could be useful to the DIY Nixies folk as this is a real issue in rebuilt tubes.

Possibly. An intriguing titbit of information is that Mg was also used in the very earliest radio valves with would match up with the WW2 era British ones emitting X-rays under pulsed reverse bias.
