Inrush current limiting (thermistor?)

I'm progressing in building a SSTC similar to Steve Ward's Mini SSTC. At most, it will be powered from rectified 230V mains voltage. I'll have a 680uF smoothing capacitor on the bus. It seems many people don't use inrush current limiting in such designs at all (or is it just that they're running the coil off a variac and hence can always "smooth start" the coil?). However I think it would be good to have limiting, if only to spare the bus voltage switch from surges which could possibly harm the switch in the long run.

I have salvaged some NTC thermistors from ATX power supplies (used for the exact same purpose there, I believe). I've never seen anyone use such a thermistor in a SSTC, so I wonder if there is any particular reason why they wouldn't work in SSTC duty? Would they limit the available output power or possibly get fried?

E: I realize the power capability is proportional to the size of the thermistor. My coil is going to run interrupted with quite a low duty cycle, so the average power is not going to be very large. So if I have a thermistor from a 400W ATX PSU, I suppose that could work for a SSTC with similar average power?

Looks like you answered your own question there wink

A 'cheap' ATX supply would use a resistor of some sort. I looked into using inductors (chokes) for the same purpose a while back, a bit more expensive, but you aren't wasting energy heating resistors.

(Others may have differing opinions)

You can switch the NTCs out after start up using a solid state relay. Remember to give the NTC plenty of room to get hot.
