I just bought a photomultiplier off eBay to 'play' with, a Hamamatsu R1414
nothing unusual - standard and cheap (10 quid with socket incl. p&p).
The specs. give 1.4 ns risetime and 15 ns electron transit time.
I am considering;

A Scanning laser microscope.
B Scanning laser camera.
C Scanning camera.
D Optical 'gate' for projectile speed measurement.

C is like a single pixel monochrome camera, could use filters for uv or visible
I'm having difficulty with the optics side but maybe I'll get it done one day shades
(Polyprojectitis !)

Anyone in UK got an unwanted laser printer optical system they could part with?

I thought one would be enough for X axis scanning and some simpler/slower scanner for Y axis scanning, possibly some kind of galvo-mirror - but now you mention it I guess two rotating mirrors would be more logical
Since you've got the bits, what do you think?
I'm very interrested but still can't imagine the physical implementation without at least one fairly large mirror. (my optics skills are quite limited)
Could you send me a photo of what you've got?
here or direct to me at **link**
Thanks

I just realised why no one has made a scanning rotating mirror video camera. frown

A hexagonal mirror at 30,000 rpm typical
with 50 (UK) fields per second I'd only get 60 lines of resolution.
I wanted direct video output;
I have too many partly done projects to start on a high speed ADC.

So, THANKS for the offer Andre
but I'd better not start yet another project just yet.
Thanks for the effort of photographing your stuff
but I'll leave it for now.

Hi Sulaiman

Loads of people have made so-called "Flying spot" cameras, from Baird to the present day. To get the scan rate up, you just need more sides than 6 on your line scan mirror.

"from Baird to the present day"
I wondered how long it would be before someone pointed out that single pixel cameras are nothing new. OK they used to rely on persistence of vision for their memory, but the ideas the same.
