A couple of days ago I posted a question about a light switch dimmer driving a flyback transformer. A couple of replies told me this is potentially unsafe. Thanks guys, much appreciated.

Here is another circuit driven by a 12 volt halogen light transformer.

Youtube video How To #5 - Make A Super Simple Flyback Driver - No Soldering Required!

I would appreciate any comment/opinion on safety and practicality using this circuit.

In the circuit description he uses the term "50KV 10nF capacitor in multiple with the output." Does this mean in parallel with the output.

this coild be a transformer directly driving a flyback, but the sound produced by the arc would be "fatter", it doesn't sound like a sine wave, rather like a chopped sine or a square wave. We could only speculate what's the device declared as "halogen light transformer", maybe it is a smps, maybe it is a regular transformer, we don't know unless someone who has experience with this device shows up and writes a reply. I see that you are looking for a simple flyback driver, may I ask for what purpose? Maybe there is a simpler way of doing that...

a halogen light transformer is just a smps with no rectification on the output - square wave of a few tens of kHz

Usually around 20 to 30kHz.

I think people have run them with a ferro-resonant capacitor, but they don't last very long.

Are you willing to solder?

re: Another Simple flyback driver circuit/are you willing to solder ?

Yes, I am perfectly comfortable soldering.

What happened was that I got lazy and was looking for something that didn't take much work. So I wasted a lot of time and energy and didn't accomplish anything. Will try not to make this mistake again.

I would appreciate any advice, circuit, etc that you could offer.

If I have not stated it earlier, my objective is to build a
Jacobs Ladder.

Thank You

The halogen lighting SMPS and light dimmer circuits aren't reliable in the long term and usually something breaks after a few hours/minutes of use, unless you use them very conservatively (power limited very low, 25-50W or so). The plasma won't be too hot so the jacobs ladder will probably just form blue/white sparks at the bottom without rising. These circuits are usually built for fun with salvaged "disposable" parts that you don't mind destroying (in my experience at least, ha).

A forward flyback converter using an astable 555 circuit to switch a power MOSFET can achieve very high open-circuit voltage, and probably a hot enough arc for a small ladder.

A "Mazilli ZVS" or Royer oscillator can handle a few hundred watts easily and will give you a relatively high output current, but a little less open-circuit voltage.

The "ideal" choice (in terms of reliability, power and flexibility) would be a bridge of power transistors switched by an external oscillator. This will involve a bit higher complexity and cost, but there are plenty of functional circuits online to follow.
