Simple flyback driver circuit

I came across the following flyback driver circuit

Can anyone explain the capacitor between the dimmer and the flyback primary ?

Given the symbol circle with the sideways "A" is the dimmer, then the cap is there to limit current, so theres no huge current short circuit due to low resistance of the primary. (Notice its in series)

If you look inside a modern dimmer, youll see a bunch of components. Those are there to on-off chop the sine wave of the 60Hz incoming power, but there still needs to be a load that should be a bulb or such. But your primary isnt enough.

I dont like this particular circuit, a 555 timer is easier to start out with, for new people. less lethal generally.

Also, I should note that this design forks on fairly low frequency, far lower than the frequency that the flyback was designed to run at, so the only spark display you will get are sparks at 50-60Hz. Use a 555 set to run at 25-50kHz, it is much safer and will produce longer and thicker discharges, all you will get with the dimmer and cap are high voltage pulses...

This circuit has been around for a long time and is generally used with ignition coils, that work at a much lower frequency than flybacks, a few hundreds of Hz.
