Arc welder as a amp source

If you drive a fixed load with a cheap arc welder, the voltage rises with the current as you turn it up.

If you are driving any serious load, the current won't reach the rated current anyway, so the thermal cutout may not trigger.

I never had these problems driving a large electropolishing tank, the welder barely got warm.

Ash Small its not fully current limit, when the electrode sticks to the work peice, the core heats up quicker.

Exactly how many amps do you want? As far as I know all the old arc welders are current-limited: I remember using a Lincoln 300A as a current-limit element in series with the 240VAC primary in a Tesla coil powered by a 10kVA pole pig. IIRC, the Amp adjust switch could be used for setting limits.

Been wondering a long time: Does anybody know why the wire to the 220VAC power switch of these welders is so thin? How much current is this rated for?

The common 140 amp welders are rated for 20 amps primary current, but here we generally run them from a 13 amp socket (240V)

They should ideally be wired into a 20 amp 'cooker' supply.
