I built my first AM radio out of a more modern kit than that, but it was still pretty crude
Simple 1n34 germanium diode, 32awg wire around a toilet paper tube, piezo speaker, etc. I forget how the reception was, but I remember picking am710 'Rado Disney'
I also built a little am transmitter a few months ago, 1mhz crystal oscillator->300r base resistor->2n3904 transistor->coil of wire/ceramic cap (forgot the values), which I could pick up on my radio (but there was some mexican station from like 900-1100 so I couldn't do much on the range testing). Too bad there was ~10 years between their existences
Good times- first motor, blowing up LED's, electrolysing water with a big stack of 9v's, etc
Oh, and don't forget those kits with the little springs that you can run pieces of wire arround to make simple circuits!
