Hi, im trying to workout the ballpark figure in air at atomsphere pressure of the voltages and frequency to make a plasma over 5 cm.

Would this also make sea water have less resance?
Cheers
Andy

I think in sea water youll have electralsys and flame/explosion. and a drop in voltage, as impeadance and current reach there fianal values.

the barrier discharge i have some experience in, but you havent given a whole lot of detail. ive done two 0.5 inch ball bearings in air with a thick wide insulator in between. the arc cant find its way through, bright blue corona and ozone pour out of a furious hiss.

Hi Patrick what values for frequncy and voltage did you use.
Im guessing that only micro points of sea water are conductive withe the space in between fresh water which should be a insultor with high k constant.
Just basing this in air, at the moment, but would like to make conductive air to then discharge a lower voltage cap through it.

What information do you need?

Are you suggesting that a salt water - fresh water - salt water structure could be used as a dielectric barrier? I don't think this will work.

Salt water is conductive due to the presence of (mostly) sodium and chloride ions, which move under an applied electric field, creating a current. This movement will immediately break down the interface between the salty and fresh water layers, effectively mixing the solutions together.

As I understand it, ultra pure deionized water has both a large permittivity and a large voltage strength, but only only the order of microseconds. Any contaminants will ruin the effect, such as ions from nearby salty water.

I agree that a volume of brine would not act like a spark gap at all. BUT you could perhaps use a low viscosity oil layer atop the brine to act as your breakdown switch. As the break down occurs it just might push the oil out of the way.
Or it might explode into flames. Hard to say.

So send a motor up in a high alutuide ballon to 50km the ignite the motor to send it up into space..... On a serious note ac voltage seems to behave different in conductive water than dc, if the salt water produces a current in the water by the electric feild something like this might work?

I think you need to get those balloons out of your head Andy! :)
