Hi Everybody,
I'm planning to build a high power variable output SMPS for my DRSSTC, and maybe other lab applications.
Spec.: 50Hz 230V AC in (max. 30A) I already designed the Boost PFC for it, output 400V max. 15A (But if the suggested IC could do this part as well, I can re-design it) Switches: FGH60N60SFD (I have a few of them) I have a pair of ~10cm OD Iron Powder toroid cores for the transformer. The output should be adjustable between 0-400V, its not a big problem if it cant go down to 0V.
I was wondering if someone could suggest me a converter IC (not gate drive) for the full bridge, which has easy to understand design guide.

Iron powder cores are not ideal for transformers in switchmode supplies; the permeability is usually quite low, so the winding inductance will be low and magnetizing current will be high. Core losses could also be significant. Power ferrite is much more suitable for the main transformer.
For the controller, it depends on how you want the supply to operate. Normal pulse width control is the simplest to get working, and as you don't need to go down to 0V, it is a perfectly valid approach. I've used the UC3825 before, but even the humble TL494 should do the job just fine.

how about a microcontroller? no one seem to use them here, but most of the small AVR or PIC have a PWM modules, comparators, ADC, etc... as well as communication (you could even pilot it from your phone with bluetooth)

That could be solution for the problem. But I'm not exactly sure what signals should I use to generate the PWM signal for the bridge. The only thing I'm sure is that in this case I can use the uC's clock to produce the needed frequency and I need an isolated (opto) feedback from the secondary side. I can implement az UVLO/OVP with an ADC.
Should I sense the bridge current too? Do I need to use shielding for the uC agains magnetic fields from the power electronics? What timing/delay should I use for synchronous rectification or should I use only fast rectifiers for the output of the transformer?

I've wanted a good reason to play round with the UCC3895, Phase shift bridge ic. I think it might be suitable for what you have in mind. It has a wide range dutycycle, the outputs being square waves, will far as I can see pass through gate drive transformers OK.
Can be used in voltage mode or peek current mode, although it looks complex shouldn't be harder to get running than your TL494. Has built in dead time delay though haven't studied the data sheet enough to understand how that's supposed to work.

I have 1KW smps based on this chip. In the past i did try to use this chip for same purpose, high power smps, but somehow was unable to get into current regulation.
