With an IPad Air2 under the christmas tree, I have joined the ranks of fellow dropouts, who lie on the couch watching Hi-Rez videos.
I would, however, also like to be able to watch videos while travelling, so I bought a WD MyPassport to act as a video host, transferring the signal to the IPad via built in WiFi.
I chose this drive due to it also has a SD card slot, so I can back up photos too.

This drive contains a traditional HD, and after 4 hours, the battery is flat, I would like to see 8 hours of uninterupted streaming if possible.

I see 2 scenarios, put in a SSD and/or increase the battery size. I have already tried out a OCZ Agility 3 drive instead of the original drive, and this increased the battery life by 30%, and I will try to test it with a Samsung 840 EVO drive, because they seem to have very low consumption. I do, however, doubt that the stock battery will be able to hold up for 8 hours of video.

This leads me into asking about the Li-Po batteries out there.
The stock battery, I can only find it on Alibaba, at 1000 minimum order, so not really an option here. Link2
There are others, and I might be able to find one that fits, but they all come with 2 wires out, red and black. Link2
The original battery has 2 red, one yellow and 2 black wires coming out of it.

What are the chances of parallelling the original battery with one of the 2-wire batteries, and how will this affect the charging circuit.

Cheers, Finn Hammer

Why not go with a ready-made power pack for the air2, e.g. Link2

You don't want to mess with lipos: they have a tendency to explode at the slightest misuse. If the cells are not perfectly matched, they will not last long, if not catch fire!

Its just an external hard drive right?

get rid of the original battery, attach a SMPS (if needed) then an RC battery LiPo. i dont see a problem as long as similar cells are in parrallel and or series. just dont go mixing them.

if the oringal battery was lipo ypu may not need to do much than de-solder then resolder.

I think that an exercise bike, alternator and regulator would be more suitable for regular eight hour video marathons

or some kind of couch-potato energy converter

Sulaiman,

You are right about the power pack, because it can be connected to the external disk, and sharge the internal battery, while still keeping the WiFi going. I`l go with that solution. WD Passport and battery pack, wrapped in gaffa, look cool!. wink
