Hi all.

Any ideas why the SMD heater part won't work but the soldering iron portion does?
Had a look on Youtube and found that the triacs on these tend to blow, one thing which seems a bit strange is that the bead thermistor on the SMD heater is only displaying a fraction of the correct temperature (50C versus 480c).

The two triacs are PT139 600E and also what appears to be a 100 ohm 2W resistor has parts of the casing flaked off or missing...
Also this has three MOC3023's and a custom IC, and an LM324 presumably for the control portion.

thanks!

My Aoyue one once went faulty, the hot air SMD element is mains powered while the soldering iron is low voltage. I had found the hot air element had broken and shorted to gnd, blowing the big resistor but luckily the triac was still OK.
The elements look a bit fragile so id check them to eliminate that possibility first, as you say there's a bead like device in there too, either a thermocouple or thermister.

If Mains has gotten through to the sensor side, may have blown some resistors or caused some problems there too. My one doesn't read temperature lower than 90 so perhaps it isn't reading anything at all?

I replaced the (blown) 1 ohm 5W resistor with 2*1.5 ohm 3W and it now heats, but the element seems to be turning on and off.

Since changing it the thermistor now reads correctly so maybe it was using the resistor for feedback or something, because before even with direct heat from the soldering iron it would only ever read about 50C max.

When you say "shorting to ground", I noticed that the element and thermistor wa very close to the top of the metal casing and since taking it apart it now seems further back.
Thanks for that! smile

Is it worth replacing it with the right resistor, would this solve the heating problem?
