Ok guys, I have an ubuntu box sitting in my room. I use ssh to login remotely (well, usually I am only a few feet away, but whatever) for a terminal, or I use freenx to login if I want the full desktop (freenx is a remote login program that works over ssh).
This worked great, up until a few days ago...
Now if I try to login via ssh I get the login prompt in a few seconds, but it takes ~30s for the password prompt to come up. From there it seems to work about like it should. But more importantly, freenx is acting very odd. The initial connection takes a little longer than before (but not more than about 30s), but then it sits for about a minute with a black screen, then I get the gnome loading window, then I get my desktop, then it sits for another minute and I get the top/bottom menu bars, and then some programs (like firefox) load normally, but others (like the terminal) are really weird. The outline of the window loads normally, then it sits for ~30s all blank, then it loads like it should. After that it runs at a normal speed.
I have ruled out any dns problems (I have the same server as in my fedora box, and lookups give the same response on both boxes).
I tried a complete reinstalling openssh (and I had to reinstall freenx in order to do a complete removal of openssh) but no change :(
Any suggestions?
I really don't want to reinstall, as I finally got the server working correctly... I am kicking myself for not having made the backup sooner

Did you use the --purge option when you removed openssh and freenx? Purge removes configuration files, which is pretty important when reinstalling software to try to fix a problem. I'm not sure what your problem could be. The best I can do is suggest that you google and look on ubuntuforums and the ubuntu wiki.

Yes I did the purge uninstall.
I should point out that during the reinstall freenx spit out a bunch of errors about ssh, (which it does not do on the fedora box) mostly saying that certian features will not be available.
I tried searching the forums, and everything pointed to DNS problems; but I am 99% sure that dns is fine

I think I got those errors when I installed the first time, but some of them may be new. None of them explain the pause during the loading of programs...
I can connect locally by using 127.0.0.1 for the address, so I know that 127.0.0.1 is good...
I also think that my config files are good since I can connect, it is just slow...

Weird errors, I'm not sure why you get them. Those paths should be valid for an ubuntu system.
You say that people have said it could be a DNS issue.. Have you tried connecting using an IP address?
Freenx sounds useful, so I'm going to install it on my Kubuntu box upstairs. I'll try connecting to it with Ubuntu's Terminal Server Client (speaking of which, perhaps it is your client that is causing problems?). I'll report back in a few minutes.
[edit] Scratch that. Too much non-standard stuff, I don't like it.

I know my client is fine, it connects to my fedora box just fine.
I usually connect with a real ip address, I just tired localhost because there was an error about it.
What do you mean by non-standard stuff?
For the simplest approach you can use nomachines software (they have a free client for most os'es, and a free server that allows up to 2 connections). If you need more than that you need to use freenx.
