Im looking at pancake motors, wondering how they work.

Im looking at may motors for flight, but i see two major types, the conventional cylinder type and the pancake type.

ive seen the ARdrone which uses a 2 pole very high RPM motor, with a tiny pinion, and a large gear on the prop.
So can the pancake motors capabilites be duplicated with a cylinder motor, even if it has to be custom wound?

The last link has this interesting quote:

He never went to University and doesn't know any mathematics and stuff like that, but he taught himself electrical engineering. And it turns out the motor he made is one of the world's leading motors in terms of power and mass. Lynch developed his own kind of algebra to do that but no other academic can understand what he's doing, but he seems to know more than many academics in electrical engineering departments because this motor is of very good performance"

im currently reading th wikis' you cite.
ive seen the old 5.25 floppy drive servo motors that use two discs with teeth whose windings minimise the air gap, if thats waht your meaning

But do the " pancake " motors for drones mean high torque, at 22 volts and low current?
We'll try turning a 26x.5 prop in VABs. Then look at the air stream.

I have seen this kind of motors in 5"25 floppys effectively

If I recall well enough the wire diameter was approximately the same as the one you showed, but I guess the spatial distribution of the coils would make for an easier rewinding

this would be a bit like a helicopter powered by a motor like this one ;)

PCB motors are the latest iteration.
Gaps in the <0.1mm range, totally sealed like a hard disk and the magnets are a single piece of N45 with the pattern embedded in it at manufacture.

hmm what about 3D printed epoxy-ferrite or similar extrudable ferromagnetic compound in the form of a motor coil form or motor lamination (all rights blah blah... ;) )? it would extend the field into the amateur domain

I'd be interested to make a small 3D printer just for that

I guess a pancake motor will outperform a cylinder motor and gear in terms of mechanical stability
