How to Diffuse LED Light as in a Laptop Screen

I need lights for my drones and other projects, but I cant figure out how the light is so uniformly dispersed. is it just white plastic? ive googled some terms but not found anything useful. I just don't see examples as thin as laptop screens.

Try googling LCD backlight diffuser, or just take apart any broken flat display.

Diffusers

For a non-ELP backlight to produce even lighting, which is critical for displays, the light is first passed through a lightguide - a specially-designed layer of plastic that diffuses the light through a series of unevenly-spaced bumps. The density of bumps increases further away from the light source according to a diffusion equation. The diffused light then travels to either side of the diffuser; the front faces the actual LCD panel, the back has a reflector to guide otherwise wasted light back toward the LCD panel. The reflector is sometimes made of aluminum foil, a simple white-pigmented surface, or, as in the 3M Vikuiti ESR, hundreds of polymer layers alternating between a low and high refractive index. Between the lightguide and the LCD panel is usually placed a reflective polarizer film which vastly increases efficiency by repeatedly reflecting any unpolarized light back, which would otherwise be absorbed by the LCD's rear polarizer.


I guess using white doped epoxy will show bright spots...

I guess sanded perspex with a side facet facing LEDs and other facets but the front one with reflective material would already provide enough diffusion for nice indication lights

Never understood why LCD screens don't just use RGB WS2812 diodes behind the panel to optimize efficiency.
This would be a lot cheaper than OLED and the individual strips could be user replaceable when they wear out.

The plastic to spread it as you'd expect, dots instead of being completely frosted. then some wierd, films/optics on top of it.

Once I get free time IVe been planning on scouring craigslist for an LED TV to strip the polarizer and LCD from and use as an overhead workbench light.
