I bought a 600 size helicopter tail rotor from hobby king for 21 US$, it weighs 93 grams and its totally complete. It does need modification for my purposes, but ive already hand spun the belt and varied the pitch from negative to positive and felt the airflow change.
so ill start with a small plywood table with a tube to carry the rotor and its belt. Ill then put and electric motor on the other end of the belt, and 3d print a gear for that too.
when the test bed is working, ill then swap in and out props for testing and verification with the computer models of custom blades.
Ill start electric but eventually move to glow-spark. these props tend to work best near 6k rpm, so ill have to print gears to match the shaft rpm of engine or electric accordingly. electric is simpler and I can just duplicate the gear exactly in the tail for a 1:1 ratio.
