has anyone hear bought a drone with a camera? If so, what kind and what are you using it for? I was thinking of getting one, but I think once the novelty runs out I'm going to be stuck with a $500 paper weight.

They're awfully fun, I'm trying to figure out a business model, but so is everybody else. And for the companies already in existence, there will be severe attrition shortly. The glut of drones and lack of anything but fun flying, is really holding us back, as is the FAA.
one company is being publicly traded as "drne" but we'll see if they last.

If you have a gopro or similar camera then $130 is enough, or less if you have your own remote.
It is interesting to see familiar places from unfamiliar viewpoints and it is fun just to fly it around so good value for money even if you get tired of the camera.
In addition there is a header for control signals so you can experiment with your own GPS waypoint system or optical navigation. It has an air pressure sensor and altitude hold that makes such experiments easier.
I fly quadcopters just for fun, but I have two that have cameras.
One is a mini 3" rotor to rotor with 720P camera and onboard recording. No FPV, auto-leveling only.
One is a 450mm quad with auto-level, altitude hold, 320x480 FPV w/ 250mW Tx and battery monitor OSD, 1080P Video record, and a 1KG payload rating.
I mostly use the small one for indoor flights, or short range (<100ft) outdoor flights where I just want a quick look at something. Being that the quad is so small and not FPV maintaining orientation at a distance is very difficult.
The large quad having FPV makes all the difference, no more disorientation or crashes. Using the 1080P cam I get some great video and stills of aerial shots. It's all basic DIY style so no gimbal or anti-vibration mounts, but even so, the result is awesome.
Stateside the FAA is becoming a major problem for anyone who wants a camera on a drone, and even more so if they plan on using the drone for anything other than fun flying.
