Today I receive my regular brochure from Maplin. I really had to laugh out loud at the products on page 3. Maplin are trying to sell, what is basically, a bettery recharging system for a minimum of £139.99, buying the whole kit comes in at just under £430.
So what do you get for £430?
A 'hydrogen reactor' includes one hydrocore - converts stored hydrogen into electricity = £139.99 A Hydrolyzer recharge system - recharges cells with hydrogen from distilled water & mains electricity = £289.99 Four 'hydrocores' (supplied filled) = £12.99 Each hydrocore is capable of supplying 4500mAh - no voltage specified, however USB is mentioned.
What gets me is that the equivalent system with NiMH cells is something under £15 and has better energy conversion efficiency (cuts out the hydrogen middleman)

Ive found similar silly-ness with the PEM fuel cells from many makers. some are experimenting with sodium borohydride "reactors". but the conversions effciency per unit of mass and volumes are terrible. I've found my solution with a alcohol piston. which is a poor solution, but much better than even the best PEM FC (which cost 17k to 22k$ for 1kW, at 40% effciency, and 60% waste heat).
some of these systems just arnt ready fro commercial or even limited expert use.
