If you have a buspirate or i2c scanner... I'd suggest looking for active addresses. I'd wager it is likely some sort of environmental monitoring chip like a humidity sensor etc.
Most microphones are analog as they connect to a sound-card chip.

If you peel back the rubber grommet, an actual part number should be printed on the device.
The bus pirate v3.6 is a good $30 investment, as it runs over a virtual serial port: Example: Open Logic Sniffer Setup:
You could look at the sniffer log to characterize the protocol while running. Then look-up the unique manufacturer address, or dump the data from device memory for further analysis.
