I think you can use a 3 phase transformer on single phase if you parallel the two outer leg coils, the voltage should cancel on the center limb (if the phases are the right way round), but you'll only be able to use it for 2/3 of the original power rating.
What are the original voltages are they useful? Could it be an isolating transformer?
There doesn't look enough space to add any extra windings on there to make a high current low voltage transformer. To turn it into a big inductor you'd probably need an air gap in it somehow.

That looks like a isolation stepdown transformer, I have one just like it, around 70kg and 10kva. Mine got outputs from 100 to 400 volt, 4-5 of them in that range. Ill par it up to be fed from a variac to have a wide range of voltages and the lowest of them at high current.

Looks like that's what it is, here's a pic of the plate. 205V secondary, and various primary voltages.
Trying to decide now whether to try and use it as-is, or take it apart and rewind. Ideally I would like a 230V primary with various secondary voltages in the range of 100-1000V single phase. I'd be limited to half the normal flux of a proper single phase core though, because the center leg is just as skinny as the outer legs.
I'm intrigued by this:
The steel core has several diferent steel sheets. Look carefully the steel core sheets. Make a drawing with dimesions of each kind of sheet.
You can open the core, take carefully the coils and assembly one core with only two legs.
so you are saying it isn't using E I cores, or that I could cut one leg off?
Still haven't got it out of the boot weighs 95kg and I need to come up with a plan not only to get it out of the boot, but up the steps and ramp to my house.
