Hi guys,
do you know of any calculator or formula which can calculate the AC resistance (ESR) of a solid conductor coil at a given frequency? Single-layer coil calculations would be enough for me.
I know how to calculate the resistance of a wire based on the skin effect, but the proximity effect plays a role as well in a coil and I don't know how to calculate that.

simplest way is to use something like FEMM, which will model displacement current and give you resistance directly. In my research i've found the current distribution is strongly affected by overall geometry, including the geometry of ferromagnetic materials nearby.

I haven't a formula, just an approximation;
T.C. - type secondaries that I have measured come out at about 2.5x dc resistance
when skin-depth = 1/3 wire diameter.

I've attached an image showing current distribution in a coil at 100kHz (part of my research at work). This is a 2.5D model - what you see is half the cross -section of a cylindrical coil. I just wanted to show the kind of complexity that results from the field geometry - this is why i suggested using a mag simulator to get AC resistance.

This image came from the Ansys Maxwell software i use, which is horribly expensive, but FEMM will do as good a job in this situation - and its free.
