Um, has anyone considered that this may be a failed Dyson sphere ?
Possibly the star inside might have run out of energy unexpectedly which would explain the low temperature as most of the energy would be contained within the sphere and what we see is merely the low energy radiation that escaped.
If so then this suggests that there was intelligent life in the universe a lot longer ago than we thought.

Well, its possible that a civilization around a dim red dwarf star may have built a Dyson sphere as a last ditch attempt to save themselves. Its a plausible hypothesis, this object if shrunk to typical star size *might* be able to sustain fusion but just barely.
also If the aliens were able to emit their waste heat as light rather than infrared, from a distance the star would "look" perfectly normal and the weak infrared emissions would be totally swamped. This could be done very easily, see Also the lack of radio signals could simply be because they are encrypted and spread spectrum.

Or it could look like it has, in fact most of the energy would be used for making MBHs for their stardrives. (thanks to Prof. Hawking for this idea)
