I was considering building a 50kv power supply using one of those CFL backlight inverter transformers and ir2153 chip. Do you think its possible to get 8kv rms out of one of those tiny transformers and step it up via CCW?

How are you planning to insulate this? 50kV will arc the length of a matchbox.

Also relevant, for HV work I recommend the grey "gasket compound" sold for car engine repair. Seen this used on commercial SMPSs used in monitors and it never, *ever* seems to break down.
