Robert Why not pull an inverter microwave apart. There is a nice core and bobbin assembly you can even leave the primary on. FWIW high voltage diodes have lousy recovery time this is why all CW multiplier supplies run sub 100kHz. Also turns ratio starts to hurt above 100's to 1. This why high voltage supplies multiply up from 2-10kV CW stack input

There is a very good article on hacking microwave oven inverters here:
The weak point with these circuits is the main IGBT, which is sensitive to voltage spikes.
That's an interesting point that John makes regarding diode reverse recovery times (I knew there was a reason why multipliers aren't efficient at high frequencies, but it had slipped my mind).
Microwave oven inverters are designed to run at ~30kHz, from memory.
With a symmetrical voltage multiplier there are 2 AC ins. Is it possible to feed the 2 AC ins from different transformers thereby increasing the power?
So if I had 2 flyback transformers each rated 30kV 200watt could I connect one to one AC in and the other flyback to the other AC in and get an effective 400watts power?
Or would the frequencies get unbalanced or out of alignment or would there be some other reason(s) this wouldn't work?

I think it should be possible using one driver circuit for both flybacks, although the AC flybacks I'm familiar with only put out ~7-8kV and, if I remember correctly, are only ~10W or so (from old TV's). They had a tripler to boost the voltage. Even the flybacks from inverter microwave ovens only put out a couple of kV, although they are rated at ~1kW. I am working on a ~50kV flyback project at the moment, although that uses pulse generator technology. (not really cost effective for your project).
I think you're on the right track by considering all the different possibilities, though.
