where did it say that on the datasheet and where did it say the 6064 could?

This was not an inexpensive chip. I am amazed that the cheaper 6064 can accept 0.05v input but the other chip can't.

The front page of the LMC6044 datasheet, Features,

• Output Swing within 10 mV of Supply Rail,
• Input Common-Mode Range Includes V−

for the LT1114 look at the two diagrams that I indicated above.

To achieve the precision and speed of the LT1114 I assume that the internal circuitry traded off input and output range to achieve precision.

I would go for +/- supplies,
for initial testing/development 2x 9v battery would be ideal,
(less than 500uA per amplifier = less than 2mA for LT1114)
later a dc/dc converter can be made or purchased, or a +/- supply psu used.

P.S. I haven't had a good look for an alternative op-amp yet
but I suspect that if you need precision you will need +/- supplies
hopefully one of our members knows of a precision op-amp
with input common mode down to 0V (V-)
.... anyone ?

I'm going to give the LTC1053CN a go.

looks good !

if you want to go for extreme accuracy there's even a suggested circuit for
"Linearized Platinum Signal Conditioner" ... just what you want !
