Does anyone know and wish to share how an ADC converts an analog signal to a digital one? I am talking about how the chip actually performs the transformation.

wikipedia

choose the type of ADC required (e.g. dual-slope for a dmm)
then find a suitable IC (speed, accuracy etc,)
then read the datasheet and application notes
then google the net for additional ideas and hints etc.
