I read an article stating the preponderance of hacking threats in Russia during the Olympics. A reporter took a dummy phone with dummy data and started browsing the internet in a cafe. Within minutes he could tell data was being lifted. How is this being done? Is the cafe in on it and the Wifi system is set up to steal the information?

Probable firesheep(attack) and blacksheep(defense), or its on WEP and they are using tools to do MITM run by a script, maybe sslstrip or wireshark with a filter to select ARP packets.

Have you got a link to a picture?

I'm waiting for part 2 of the report from here Link2
My speculation is, that the cafe is infected itself and redirects DNS requests to malicious sites. They might use unpatched holes in Android or Windows to install malware.

afaik internet access via Wi-Fi is insecure
even if the path all the way from the router is secure. (i.e. any country)
many ways to get into our devices !!

Every single cell phone call in and out of London was intercepted and recorded by NSA-GCHQ during the London Olympics, so one would hardly expect anything less in Russia.
