BAB, big-ass-bomb...

these weapons have always interested me, but whats with this "9-second" delay, is that magical or calculated?
the bouncing weapons were just so innovative and a total deviation from all previous weapon philosophy.

Barnes was one of those masterful minds like Tesla, Northrop, Feynman, and Wozniak.

Barnes was one of those masterful minds like Tesla, Northrop, Feynman, and Wozniak.

The 9 second delay was to allow the earth displaced by the entry of the bomb into the ground to settle back into place ensuring that the detonation energy was effectively coupled into the ground without compressible voids which would have attenuated seismic shock transmission. The war being what it was, the 9 seconds would also have meant that Germans who'd ducked into cover when the bomb hit would now be looking out again when nothing had apparently happened, but an apparent dud.

Barnes Wallis was also the designer of the R101 airship which crashed and exploded in 1930, accelerating the end of the British airship era.

Meh, no biggie, we americans had a similar problem with the Akron and Macon here on the pacific coast, involving admiral Moffet.

Lazy cowards who dont try at all, point to their own lack of failures, as if we are supposed to show respect or something.

the attenuation across a void makes perfect sense, like a voltage drop...
