Hi all.
This is all over the Net, essentially Penrose and Hammeroff theorised a few years back that the brain uses quantum processing to increase efficiency which as a side effect results in consciousness.

Seems that he may be right, the ability of xenon (Xe) to inhibit consciousness may well be proof that it is a quantum effect in the microtubules and as such may have implications for the Theory of Mind (ToM) as well as artificial intelligence and the Singularity.

So far of 20 testable predictions, six have been tested and found to be true.
This in itself is Nobel worthy IMHO.

There's nothing special about Xenon.
It's an NMDA inhibitor (like beer)

Does that affect the theory?

I believe there is a widespread misunderstanding on what "hardware" of the brain can explain. It is like trying to understand the behaviour of a computer equipped with complex software by reasoning about the workings of a transistor. Even if you'd know everything about a computers hardware, the behaviour of it depends mostly on the software.

Consciousness is not really understood, since you can't measure it. What we believe to know, comes from introspection and the ability to communicate about it. Whether it exists in humans other than myself, I can only infer by either the fact, that my biology is similar to that of others or by talking to them. This is a far cry from measurement.
Whether quantum computation takes place in the brain and how or why quantum computation is connected to consciousness (qualia) is not known.
Orch-Or theory is not a theory, it is speculation.
