I am scouring the net looking to purchase a 10kV cap at around 10uf, but not having much luck finding one. Question: As a fall-back position, is it a good idea or a bad idea to purchase two 5kV caps rated at 20uf and connect them in series in order to achieve my capacitor specifications? What are the pros and cons?
Also the capacities vary within tolerances, the smaller will be subjected to a larger proportion of the voltage. With new caps from the same batch this probably isn't significant.

With capacitors in series connection you can even the load balance by adding even sized resistors over each capacitor, they will also work as bleeder resistors for safety.

The voltage rating between the terminals and the can if metal may be an issue or not, depending if the manufacturer has allowed a safety margin. Then again you can simply mount them using an insulating sheet of Perspex.
Balancing resistors are a good idea like Mad’s said, and will equalise any small difference in leakage currents of the caps.
Using several capacitors can sometimes be a more flexible alternative for experimental purposes, as you can add more if you need them, or re-connect them for different voltages.
