My roomates and I get out fairly often around Minnesota and Wisconsin. One has a Garmin etrex 210 that comes with a computer cable (serial->usb converter type). We use a workaround to get the proprietary garmin output to work with a google earth plus account running on a laptop display for the initial driving to site. We like to go geocaching at night to make it a bit more sporting and it is very cold in this region at night in the winter. Writing in a small tablet with a wet pencil after digging around in the snow for an hour is sometimes too much of a hassle so one roomate who works at a plastic card printing shop made a few hundred of the below.

I go all the time, especially with the dog. Of course, by all the time, I mean not recently, but I plan to get back into it.
I've got a cheap eTrex Legend. Works fine. I used to use a BT GPS on my backpacks shoulder strap, with a Ipaq for display, but that was a pain, especially when getting wet or dirty, like I always end up doing.

I've gone from time to time with a friend of mine. Its great fun, and trying to find all the sites in a specific area (we're considering a trek up the Georgia leg of the Appalachian trail to look for sites) is an interesting challenge. It kind of harkens back to amateur radio fox hunts, which were always a great excuse to go out and get some exersize in the woods as a kid. I'm getting a GPS unit of my own with the income tax check, so maybe I'll go out and place a few sites of my own.

This looks like quite good fun - I might have a go at it myself, but I've only got a PDA with GPS built in - not sure if the batteries would last long enough.
Just need to find some software for it as well now...
