I wonder if this will have any measurable effect on the approaching comet ISON.

Apparently this could also induce the mother of all solar flares if there is a particularly large sunspot group at the time of the flip.

Auroras will be visible at lower latitudes. I think it's too much to ask the planet to make them visible near Florida. Heh, I'll just ask my parents to take me up north this winter.

If they are visible near Hawaii then its time to find an underground bunker.

"The sun switches its polarity, flipping its magnetic north and south, once every eleven years through an internal mechanism about which little is understood."

Through an internal mechanism which is little understood??

Surely we all know, from mbasic electric motor theory, that this can only occur when subjected to an 'alternating' external field??

There is some Information on the internet that suggests the earth does the same thing every 3600Yrs which causes continental drifts and some other nasty natural disaster's like earth quakes, volcano's and monster tsunami's. I guess they call it a polar shift.

Probably plasma turbulence building up, the Earth's field flips every now and then due to waves of molten superheated nickel and iron changing their average spin direction.

We'll just put on a pot of tea, then.. cheesey

What ever the sun is doing, we are just observing the effect magnetically. This might be
a dull probe. During the flip is there any other effects that are noticed, such as gravitational
blips that can be monitored ?

Avi observed effects on GPS drift with that last CME, se his site.

Also you might notice power glitches and transient effects such as dropped phone calls and poor 3G coverage.
