Hey all, I was thinking the other day about how normal transformers work and thought about how it might work with a Tesla Coil.
Here is the basic idea. A smaller coil inside of a larger one. The top of the larger one would run a line down to the bottom of the smaller one. The top of the smaller one would go out to the top load and the larger ones base would be the ground. I added a picture to help explain it a little better.
Lemme know what you think. If it would work or not.

What is your goal with this setup contra a coil that is twice as long but in one layer?
Your problems here is as Sulaiman points out, insulation.
With the wire between the two coils you are having the voltage difference build up over the coil, from start very close to the end, with a potential difference of maybe 150kV this will be very hard to insulate against, unless you have a great distance between the coils and they are submerged in oil or cast in epoxy. So if your first concern was to make a coil shorter to minimize the setup, now you are only left with a coil that is much much wider.
I don't remember where but I remember reading about the proximity effect and its influence on Tesla Coil secondaries... Essentially the added resistance increases at the same rate as applying more layers... Even if you did overcome the insulation issue, the proximity effect could make it pointless considering you can just build a larger coil for less hiccups.

Doesn't this seem to be something I would try. looks like we might have another experimenter that wants to change the way it has been since Tesla's day of glory.
