I'm no expert Chris, but I think it's generally a good idea to protect against overdriving, so long as you factor in the zener's capacitance - a non-linear voltage dependent variable reactance - across the gate. The gate will take longer to charge up with a zener diode across it, with prejudice to switching speeds.

Reverse biased zener diodes will often exhibit varactor behaviours, producing a crop of RFI harmonics of the drive signal. They can have C's of hundreds and even thousands of pF.

Well I don't want to give up on reliability will a TVS diode do the same?
