Hello guys.

I built this driver quite a few months ago and since then have been mad-like in the pursuit to understand how it works. Am an audio guy, so HV stuff, power conversion and magnetics are usually out of my business; I understand them much less than say, effect of dominant pole capacitor on amplifier slew-rate hehe...

After a lot of wandering without getting any wave-shaped plot I finally succeeded in simulating the driver.

I have seen the animated Java simulation video in YT , but through simulating it myself a LOT of my questions have found their answers.

The most interesting thing l probed was on the resonant capacitor. It passes 20A RMS when running with the driver!!!!! No wonder some of my film caps have cracked/exploded thanks to Mr. Mazzilli. :P

The inductor, transformer and all the models used in the simulation is from the generic template/library that comes with the free simulator. The transformer has 3+3 primary turns and secondary to primary ratio of 10000. The setup is a bit crude, but works.

I have simulated countless audio circuits with it. It can sim the ZVS too...yoohoo!

Wanna show you some plots and fotos. They look gorgeous(well, at least to a newbie like me hehe)

The schema-

And some close shots of the driver in real life

Hi Shaan !

Congratulations by the nice presentation of your project, and clear info about the results as well as your doubts...

I have started using the SIMetrix some weeks ago, and I am not complete familiar with the possibilities of the soft.

However I am more familiar with the magnetics and switching devices. I am starting simulating discharging caps throug sidacs, diacs and triacs so far.

By the way, I think a transformer 3+3:30000 turn ratio is not easy, to construct. (and energize it)

Metalized capacitors have the metal electrode so thin, thin that when a pulse of 20A pass the metal vaporizes... the solution is using the old caps ( oil paper dielectrics and aluminun foil electrodes....).

Did you try to use microwave caps in the place of C1 ? Some microwave caps are 0.9uF rated 2200V, oil and Al foilconstrution.

You may transfer the C1 to the secondary, try to simulate Tx1 as 3+3:300 turn ratio, with secondary connected to a 100picofarad cap rated 5kV (Tx1 has to have very low leakage inductance, couping factor ~1, )

100picofarad x 5000V is easy to be buit at home, using windows glass and kitchen aluminun foil.

Regards

Newton
