Hello everyone, I just got back from educational, yet frustrating, afternoon trying to tune my tesla coil. I don't have my own oscilloscope or signal generator so my school let me use the ones they have. The o-scope is a nice model and not too hard to figure out, however I am going to need to find a more professional signal generator to bring in if I'm going to properly tune my Coil. Can anyone recommend a model that will do the trick- doesn't have to be top of the line, just good value!

Thanks!

I use one of these slapped on a breadboard with an arduino nano to control it:
Link2

Works great for the money!

For GBP20, (USD32) or less you can get 1 Hz - 6 MHz DDS with lcd display, rotary encoder, connectors etc. and programming done
or in a case with power adapter Link2
lots of choices.

I use an old (via eBay) Farnell LF1 for audio, proven completely reliable,
many similar used audio sig-gen available used,
nice to have a rugged box, connectors, controls etc.

If you need another project, a sig-gen is an excellent learning platform.
(Mr. William Hewlett Link2 comes to mind)

Ooh, thanks, these are awesome suggestions. Yes, the signal generator at my school was bad news- it would only go up to 100kHz and the waveform output I got was completely messy even before I started scoping my tesla coil primary. My instructors said it hadn't been used probably ever :D

Why don't you forget about an oscilloscope and signal generator. Do what Tesla did. He used a wavemeter.
As a matter of fact he invented it.

Getting an RF source is a lot easier then building Tesla's wave meter there. After all, look at Item "G", that's a thermocouple Ammeter, and what kind of a silly person has thermocouple ammeters lying around, ..... oh... heh... would you look at that.

Use the RF source and a 10K in series and look for the voltage drop as a Dip meter and you got it!
If you're not sure about the Dip meter, just look up an RF probe. A simple RF probe will work fine to show you the minimum.
