Hi all. Just acquired what turned out to be a broken vacuum pump, originally intended for aircon systems.
First thing I noticed, the coupler between the pump assembly and the motor itself is missing. Its possible that because this part is rubber it perished and fragmented.
The pump assembly doesen't turn at all even with fresh oil, took it apart after draining and there are a few rust spots inside on the top housing
Is this likely to be a lost cause or can it be saved?

There is not a whole lot to go wrong with rotary vane pumps, however the tight tolerances required to get good vacuum performance do mean that it is quite easy for a bit of dust/rust/etc to get into them and cause them to jam.
Luckily, if you pull it apart and scotchbrite away the rust/grime and reassemble it everything should work just fine. I rebuilt one a while ago which was just a big ball of rust inside and had significant pitting on the shaft seals, but afterward it was still able to pull down to a few tens of mtorr. Also, depending on who made the pump, you may be able to find a rebuilt kit which will get it back to 'like new' performance, which have a replacement shaft coupler, new seals, etc and usually run about $50.
Some pics of the duoseal I worked with, it was completely covered in the nastiest oil rusty grime I have ever had the displeasure to try and remove, this was after the cleaning!
