Pretty much the same reason I stopped doing that sort of thing, it was fun at first but you don't really learn a whole lot from it.

I disagree. My first project, after drawing a few arcs from a few flybacks, to see which gave the biggest arc, was using the 'best' flyback to build an HF TIG welder, based on an SGTC circuit, driven by the 'single transistor flyback circuit', and 'rolling my own' HV capacitors. I learned a lot AND it's 'really useful' smile

Of course, you could always just 'BUY' an HF TIG welder cheesey

Or nick one from college cheesey

I don't dispute you learn some useful things from experimenting with high voltage, but its just when drawing arcs from flybacks/mots is the only thing you continually do then it looses its appeal after a while (IMO).

You can buy a lot of things, but it's more fun to make them :D

You could try a few different lightbulbs, some work a lot better than others. There are quite a few articles out there on home made plasma globes.

There is a 'theoretical' risk of X-rays with some, but I doubt that will be a problem with your driver. Maybe someone else can confirm this?

If he is planning on using the plasma globe driver to drive the tranformer there shouldn't be a risk of x-ray.

As far as I recall, plasma globe only work on AC which shouldn't produce x-rays.

First off, why do you automatically assume I'm a guy? I'm a girl, haha, TeslaCoilGirl, in fact, under a new name :P
I don't have access to any parts to really build a driver myself, so I'm likely going to stick with the driver. Of course I need to wait until Thanksgiving break to work on it, with 3 APs consuming the majority of the time. I might see what bulbs I can access in the mean time. I know that Sal (juniortore1 on YouTube) has overclocked his globes, but I'm not sure if he's ever made his own.

Not sure if possible with the plasma globe transformer but you could play around with ionic wind. Make an ionic motor or a Ionocraft.
