I'm just curious if anyone has used a metallic bolt on the top of the secondary to secure their toroids with. I typically use nylon bolts on my assemblies, but was looking for something that would be more reliable in the long run as nylon bolts can tend to brittle with age and easily break.
My concern with conductive hardware is that it could provide a conductive path from the bolt into the center of the secondary.
Anyone have any experiences or failures using conductive hardware in this manner?
I found that standard 1/4-20 Phillips/slot head bolts will cause internal (in reference to the secondary) corona and arcing, but the round head 1/4-20 bolts work just fine with no issues. I even use them as the primary electrical connection from the HV end of the secondary winding to the topload. Just have the round top inside the secondary with the threaded section pointing up and out of the toroid.
If secondary HV lead corona develops due to insulation breakdown I found that you can use a small section of annealed 1/8" copper water pipe as corona suppression. Just place it over the HV lead where it is having corona. Make sure the edges are rounded off and finely sanded though. I have this arrangement on my 3kW CW SSTC.

I've always used a metal bolt, but a round-headed carriage bolt, and I don't pierce it right through the plastic disc that seals the top of the secondary. I put it through another disc, or some sort of spacer block, and screw that onto the top of the secondary end disc with nylon bolts.

I used brass bolts on the secondaries for my DRSSTC V.
I put a copper disc under the acrylic end cap to make the terminal much larger and less likely to cause corona. After the disc was set in I poured in epoxy and completely covered the disc and bolt head. Never had any issues with corona from the top.
