As with most any occupation or hobby with potential for danger or death, it comes with an associated risk that is fatal given an arbitrarily long period of time.
Even with the best intentions and safety measures, you can't compensate and prepare for everything. Additional safety and checks will decrease your chances of having an accident but it will never completely eliminate it.
Unfortunately he fell victim to a statistical freak occurence before he could wrap up his career and it's quite sad. I never really watched his show vigorously but found him highly entertaining.
Check, double check, and don't become too complacent!

He was an accomplished entertainer. Kind of sad really as he always had such enthusiasm.
But Nature is like that – even a simple mosquito bite kills numerous people every year. However, you have to admit it’s not really too surprising– he was always provoking poisonous reptiles and arachnids of some sort.

Yeah, i can't believe it myself. I always found his shows so entertaining. "This exTREMELY venemous CREAATURE is such a GLOOORius bloke!" He'll definitely be missed.
Of course, sting rays will do that. Thats why you do the "stingray" shuffle when swimming in the gulf waters off of Florida, being where you walk in the water without picking up your feet. Stingrays will lie right underneath the sand in the shallow water. Step on them, and they'll put that barb right through your archilles, however, if you just kick them, they'll scuttle off. I imagine something similar might have happened to this poor fellow.
Curiously enough, i found this on GOOGLE and it appears getting barbed through the heart via Stingray is not all that uncommon . . . "Some 1,500 stingray-related injuries are recorded in the United States every year, mostly minor wounds around the feet and ankles. But some stingray injuries are deadly serious. A couple of years ago, a 35-year-old Australian bloke on holidays in Fiji was stung in the chest as he swam over a large stingray; the barb punctured his heart and he died a day later as a result of his injuries."

I used to watch his show all the time. Can't say I'm too surprised, but he was a pretty cool guy. Um, I'm sorry, a "wildlife warrior Australian bloke."
