I was thinking about making a lenard tube (Electron gun) and that project needs a vacuum pump. So i basically want to ask. Would something like this work?

And would the voltage of a DC flyback work? Also would a AC flyback give better results?

Tubes like this operate between .1 and .005 pascal (.00075-.0000375 torr), which is, concerning measurment in inches of Mercury, basically a perfect vacuum (29.92 inHg below atmospheric).

This is beyond the reach of the tire-inflator pump.

Just watch out, get above 10-20 KV acceleration potential and you'll start making penetrating-wavelength X-rays. This is why color TVs (30-40KV) use thick leaded glass.

What about 15 kv? Also would something like that work?

What about trying to extract the CRT from some old color TV?

You need a DC voltage to keep the electron stream in one direction, from the filament/cathode to the anode

Okay. DC flyback then. One that i can run at 15 kv.

But what about the vacuum pump video i posted above? And what about trying to extract the CRT?

The vacuum pump in the video. The guy says it has a maximum of 30 HG. Which is equal to about 762 mmHG
Which is equal to 101 591.645 pascals. Right?

Thats my "electron gun" ^^

I used a cheap vacuum pump - it worked...

Great. Can you charge people up with that gun? Make their hair stand and such? Or make something similar to corona or ST Elmo fire? Or make things hot due to the bombardment of electrons? I read on a random website that an electron gun can be used to cut through metal like butter. Is that true?

It just luminates the powder form the inside of a neon bulb - nothing else ^^
Hmmm strong electron guns are used in PVD systems. Those guns are really powerfull. They vaporise metals.

I would give making one of them a shot. But i do not like X-Rays :P. Also can you try to light the electron beam on aluminum foil or copper wire for example? I bet that they would make corona. And. If i point it at a person. Will he get charged up and electrocute everything around him :P. And since when does a fluorescent light or neon bulb have powder o.o. I broke into a few. And it was empty. Aside from the wonderful smell of mercury tho haha
