Interesting.
With the advent of high power blue and UV lasers, the possibility of generating the bubbles without needing a radioactive seeding agent (a serious criticism of the original experiment) exists.

I've never fuly understood these experiments, but looking across the whole field of LENR, I don't think scientific misconduct and error are sufficient to explain all of the small anomalies that have been reported by hundreds of investigators over these last decades. The impulse to monetize every new discovery - the setting up of 'cold fusion' companies amid great claims - has done so much damage to the field that it may take decades to recover.

"Quantum tunnelling or tunneling (see spelling differences) refers to the quantum mechanical phenomenon where a particle tunnels through a barrier that it classically could not surmount. This plays an essential role in several physical phenomena, such as the nuclear fusion that occurs in main sequence stars like the Sun.[1] It has important applications to modern devices such as the tunnel diode[2] and the scanning tunnelling microscope. The effect was predicted in the early 20th century and its acceptance, as a general physical phenomenon, came mid-century.[3]

Tunnelling is often explained using the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and the wave–particle duality of matter. Purely quantum mechanical concepts are central to the phenomenon, so quantum tunnelling is one of the novel implications of quantum mechanics."

To be more specific, I meant that I'd never fully understood the Widom-Larsen LENR theory of local breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, so I think I shall go outside for a while, and sit in the shade with an icy glass of Pernod. smile

I'm still reading Paul Dirac's 'Quantum Mechanics' (fourth edition).

You're a braver person than I'll ever be, Ash. All those bra-ket notations, Hilbert spaces, and Hermitian conjugates going round and around in my head like glacé cherries bobbing about in a glass of advokaat... Link2

A few years back I tried and failed to replicate minimal results with this apparatus, but perhaps it failed as I did not use additional isotopes.
wink
Still doesn't inspire much confidence,
initially I hoped the semi-parabolic shape of the flask would indicate a Laplace spherical harmonic distribution of foci at resonance. However, no structured cavitation observed in water even with dissolved CO2 gas etc…

Perhaps someone else will be lucky enough to figure out how to reliably replicate the results...

We should start an "Add your SL setup here" thread smile

In my case the limiting factor was the lack of the special transducers required.
As it turns out there are workarounds one of which is to use a home fired BaTiO3 setup where the required ceramic is pressed and fired using a tablet press similar to that used for superconductors.

For those hoping to duplicate this, you will need barium carbonate (BaCO3) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) in reasonably pure form, a kiln and some appropriate safety equipment such a glovebox.
The two need to be mixed together very well indeed, calcined at about 700-800C for twenty hours then re-pressed and fired again.
The poling requires heating of the pellet to about 285C from memory then applying an HV field across the short axis and slowly cooling over an hour to "lock in" the field.

If you wanted to, the last step could be skipped and the HV field applied while the transducer was still in the kiln slowly cooling.

The formula is BaCO3+TiO2 + Heat = BaTiO3+CO2

I'm taking my time, just a few pages now and again. I know a lot of people find Dirac's maths hard to follow, but, so far, it seems fairly straightforward, maybe because I'm not a mathematician, so Dirac's 'symbolic method' doesn't 'go against the grain'.
