Hi all,
I'm currently building a H-bridge for an SSTC using IRG4PF50WD IGBTS. I'm curious to know if its ok to use a unidirectional TVS from the drain to source for over voltage protection?
I assume so, I'm just not sure if it will be destroyed if it decides to conduct the free wheel current rather than letting the diode in the IGBT do its job?
I blew up a drain to source unidirectional TVS on the weekend and thought that might be what caused it.
Appreciate your advice!
Greg.

Yes. Recall that the IGBT already has an internal diode, so that will clamp well ahead of any TVS which is much higher voltage and much slower as well.
