Sounds plausible, back of the envelope calculations show that a nuclear explosion of the magnitude suggested would account for a lot of the Moon's features and potentially Mars as well. For all we know Deimos and Phobos could have been produced when Mars suffered a similar fate, accounting for the surface morphology.
This has massive implications for SETI, if planets larger than a certain size can't produce moons then those can be basically written off as potential sites for complex life due to the geological instability and likelihood of tidal locking.
