Toroidal primary?

Anyone wound a primary with a toroidal coil as opposed to the traditional flat spiral coil? It would be cool to see what happens. Sorry for the crappy drawing, this is kinda what I mean :)

Thoughts anyone? Just another crazy idea! I am going to try this.

I'm afraid physics might get in the way,

Most of the flux will be concentrated in a toroidal field through the center of your primary, while only the small poloidal portion will envelope the secondary (the field we use to couple energy to the secondary).

This will give you a primary with a much higher inductance, but you will end up with very low coupling.

Its an interesting idea! Maybe it could be used for a coil with a really stumpy secondary, to provide a high-impedance tank circuit.

I would rather decrease the coupling by moving the secondary upwards... at least you won't get spark overs.

Like HVF said. The magnetic flux will be concentrated at the center of the toroidal winding.

An equivalent winding would be a solenoid type primary winding which at its center is the secondary coil.
