For a marx just use the cheapest capacitors you can find, usually the blue ceramic ones. There is a large sortiment of them on Ebay, up to 30 kV (oil may be required) with capacitances in the nanofarad range.

There can be a huge difference due to dielectric and technology used, if you look at the hydraulic analogy here: and hold it up against information from here and here you should have a good idea about the difference in ratings.

The safety Y.. capacitors are tested for much higher voltage than is the actual line voltage. From the law, they are required to withstand a 2 kV AC voltage applied between the live/neutral and protective earth, which is where these capacitors go.
