Wow! Just wow!

It's weird the FBI practically helped them build it, waited till it was done, then arrested them. Whereas they probably could have prevented the whole thing early on by not giving them funding and helping them find the components. I'm sure the two guys could and would have found another way, but why instigate them? Probably ensuring the arrest or wanting the xray for themselves suprised (just kidding)

(cue Ebay pulling anything remotely HV related or vacuum tubey)...

This sucks, whats the worst that could happen? So what, they give themselves radiation burns but its not like they could have made it portable.
Someone needs to point out that there are a lot of amateur fusors, etc operating with perfectly good shielding etc and people with more IQ than a dozen FBI agents put together who would put a PhD to shame.

You thought the "War on Drugs" was bad, now its the "War on Mind". Its positively Orwellian.

To be fair, between google and ebay almost any moron with a pair of brain cells to rub together could build some x-ray equipment just dangerous enough to hurt themselves and people around them. I can see this kind of situation happening with more and more niche hobbies.

3D printers and printed guns being a perfect example, 3d printed guns are not a threat to the public at all BUT there is a very real danger of people who are ignorant of the hazards involved hurting or killing themselves with their own printed guns.

Define "portable"
"the plan was to buy an industrial X-ray system and install it in a truck. "
but yes, it will be used by some as a "reason" to ban anything remotely interesting.

Hold your horses...

Claim to be a secret guild, go after "enemies" for a religious cause, build "weapon" of way over the head for a single amateur....

I see nothing unusual here or for that matter anything that will interrupt amateur science.

The idea to do this has actually been around for a long time, and has apparently been "rediscovered" many times by various people. IIRC there was even an episode of "Quincy" (back in the late 70s or early 80s) where someone did this.

A few years back there was a controversy about antique TVs that people still used and if they should be modified to include radiation failsafes that cut the HV in the event of a runaway or open tube heater failure.

The circuitry to do this would be very simple, just a mains relay inline with the 240V and an end window detector based on a scintillator+CdS resistor to keep the lawyerbots happy.
