Transformer Questions

I am working on a DC-DC converter, using a push pull setup, and wanna use an E core transformer I have.

I tried finding something on here and on Google but couldn't find anything too helpful.

The core is gaped on the middle legs, and I was wondering if that will effect anything using this topology?

The converter will only be used for about 100 watts if that makes any difference.

As far as I'm aware, gapped cores are GENERALLY only used for flyback topology.

You could try grinding them down by rubbing on abrasive paper, but you don't want to get them too hot, so don't use a grinder without coolant.

I figured as much, I dont have anything handy I could use to grind it down, I have a toroid core that would work if I had to use it.

Is there any good places to buy ungaped E cores?

Most stores that sell cores will have ungapped cores.
You need to grind them to a fairly good degree of flattness/precision for them to be efficient. It is easier to just buy the right core.

I dug through my cores and I found a toroid that came from the power supply of a 150W (400W peak) amplifier. It measures 1.25" OD, .75" ID, and it's .5" thick. Think this core will be able to do 100W continuous?

Alternatively, you could try using a flyback transformer core as well if you're not looking for too high of power output.

Well I stated in the first post that I will only be drawing about 100 watts from the converter. I believe I have a core that will work now though.

get one dead computer PSU and take out the core (and possibly other goodies, like high amperage diodes).

I actually have acquired 3 Xbox 360s, 3 computer motherboards, 3 ATX power supplies, and an old CRT monitor just the other day. I have been going crazy taking all the parts off.

I'm trying to make the design small, so I don't wanna use one of the big cores. Are there any general rules to core size and power?

I'd guess four square centimetres per killowatt, so ~160 mm^2 for 100 Watts.

Others may have different opinions.

(check my maths. Maths isn't my forte)
