I have a 1millifarad 2700(3150 Surge) volt cap bank that I need to build a charging supply for. initially I was using full rectified MOT with 5k ohms for current limiting. it would charge to around 2kv within 20 seconds. I want to see the full potential of 2700 volts, but need some ideas. I tried making a half wave voltage doubler, but just sagged from the current draw of the bank and didn't charge at all. as far as parts I came up with, 5kv 35mA NST, several MOTs and a bridge rectifier made from oven diodes. 5k high power resistor. I also have a variac.

take a variac and phase two mots so you have 4200 vac and make a HV bridge rectifier out of 3amp diodes like a 1n5408. you will need about 6 per a section of the bridge. add a series resistor and fire up. you could add a resistive divider and a dvm to set the voltage. it should make 2900v. Respect it or you could die, so please add a crowbar or shorting stick

I took two MOTs with primaries in parallel and secondaries in series into a bridge rectifier. it keeps popping breakers in my garage with obsolete wiring. ill have to find a ballast and try again when I have more time.

hi lokeycmos how did you make the series connection? did you put the inputs 180 deg out of phase witch is the correct way or did you connect the frame and output. Add some series resistance at the bridge output to limit the current. Check for shorts.

i figured out the problem. yes the mots are in phase with each other. 3 of the 4 HV diodes in my bridge rectifier blew shorted. ill try again when I have some more.
