is it possible to audio modulate a spark gap tesla coil? perhaps putting the modulation on the mains input to the coil? thanks!

I think the action of the spark gap will completely disrupt the audio. You can use triggered gaps (exposed or tube based) to get midi audio, but I think you have to have CW operation for true audio.

You can audio modulate a spark gap coil by varying the spark gap switch frequency. Not very easy. You'd have to replace the spark gap with a tube of some sort to do the high voltage, high current switching.
Not sure its ever been done, but people have discussed it throughout the years.
