Hello I spent a while experimenting with resonant circuits that were driven by discharge of high voltage from that builds up inside a capacitor.
I noticed some interesting effects:
1) When there is a spark gap in the middle of the coil, the spark begins to act differently and seems to have a spherical appearance.
2) Neodym magnets inside a coil in resonance make this circuit draw more current but that doesn't seem to effect the current draw.
I have no ways of measuring those parameters. I have no oscilloscope or accurate frequency meter.
I want to build a very classical Tesla coil.
If I but a Neon Sign Transformer, what do I need to do to drive a 18" Tesla resonator? What current of the NST? Do I need a Terry filter and a safety gap?
How do I tune the primary capacitor bank to the secondary? Is there any math I can do and what capacitors should I chose?
Based on my observation of the spark behaviour, I want to make a Tesla Coil secondary that will consist of two cones. The tips of those cones will face inwards with a spark gap between them.
Currently I am reading into some documents on Tesla's radiant energy experiments and I find it to be in coherence with my observations. Spark gaps in the middle of coils behave differently than ordinary spark gaps. They seem to spin and create less heat. All that was observed at 20KHz at around 20000V.
I live in Frederick MD, USA. If you live within 2hrs and you have a shop with a lathe, I will pay for this device to be wound on the lathe.

Ok I won't use this term any more. If I get any interesting results I will post it on my personal blog, not here.
I need to build a tesla coil with a tunable self frequency of the primary coil. Secondaries will change. What do I need to do?
I appreciate Eastern Voltage Research products, but I need to keep somewhat close to the classical design of the coil. No electronics that I cannot adjust

You can do that and/or tap the primary. I did a similar thing with my last couple Tesla coils. I made a large primary with 11.5 Turns so that I can use it for many different secondary coils. Changing the tank capacitance will change the 'tunable frequency range' of the primary through use of tap points or adjustable tap

How would i know what capacitors should i use? i can use picofarad capacitors, nanofarad capacitors, microfarad capacitors. I can make a bank of 10 a bank of 100 a bank of 1000.
I read that Tesla had built his transformers in such way that primary and secondary have the same mass. Yes, mass of copper used to make the windings.

That depends of many things like resonant frequency, transformer power, desired impedance, current handling capability, voltage rating and so many more that you need to determine that yourself.

What do you think about this?
Yes, that’s because both ends have the same power. A transformer may change voltage and current with it's ratio, but power in will always be ~= power out minus losses.

Should I figure this out empirically ? I know that there are Tesla Coil Calculators and various approximation formulas but what are the most important factors? But there is also cost.
